Teamwork: A Little Shove When You Need It
20 March 2008It was a partly cloudy day. Light rain and Spring Fever were in the air. My weekend was before me. With a smile on my lips and a twinkle in my eye, I thought of all I planned to do in the next few days. All of a sudden, I hit a snag. In the process of rounding the corner of Airport and Aviation in my car, I ran out of gas. Well, this had never happened to me before and I really didn’t know what I was supposed to do… except get out of the way of oncoming traffic! Luckily, my car’s momentum enabled me to make it around the turn, but just barely. The Carl’s Jr. parking lot was less than 50 feet away, so I did the only thing I could think of: I called Sue Jones, my co-worker-extraordinaire in the Training and Development Department. While telling Sue of my dramatic happenings, low and behold an angel appeared in the form of Bren Boddy-Thomas from the Help Desk. Sporting her blue umbrella and high heels, she ran to me in the drizzle and asked if she could help. “Oh my gosh, yes!†I replied. She got behind my car in heels and all and started pushing– one hand on the car and the other holding her umbrella. Then, another “Good EB-er†appeared to help! John Smith, of TCSC, recognized my car helped push it out of harms way. Once my car was safe in the parking lot, John went on his way with a smile and a wave and Bren offered me a ride. I’d deal with the car later…While in Bren’s car, rehashing the ridiculousness of my actions (or lack thereof) and also giving my profound thanks, I realized that Bren and John exemplified one of our core values: Teamwork. How wonderful is it that we work in an organization where our co-workers - our friends - are really there for us when the going gets rough? They get the rough going! My weekend wasn’t a total wash and now I’ve got another great story to tell. Thank you Bren and John! Christine
